Some of the town's people of Tewkesbury have asked us to produce this very small documentary to highlight the shortage of parking in the town at peak times.
These issues have been brought to a head by the news that Tewkesbury Borough Council decided in secret to sell one of the town centre car parks (Oldbury Road – owned by the rate payers) to an interested third party who has not been disclosed.
It is claimed the decision to sell was carried by Borough Councillors from outside of the town with little or no knowledge of the town's parking problems and:
- There was NO car parking study before the decision to sell.
- There was NO economic study before the decision to sell.
- There was NO public or trader consultation before the decision to sell.
- The decision behind closed doors to sell came the day after the controversial edge of town Sainsbury's supermarket was approved
During the regular flooding experienced by the town several times a year, major car parks are lost for days or weeks at a time, most recently some for some two months (eg: Gander Lane, Swilgate Road and New Hospital).
During peak events such as Market Days, Medieval Festival, Food Festival, Mop Fair, Victorian Fair, Saturdays and other peak times, there is a frequent shortage of parking.
